I am Home (Rainbows) Words by All Directions Community Choir Composition and arrangement by Cath Rutten Feeling introspective, crashing storms Waiting for the calm and grey to come Deluge of the waves wash over me Weathering the storms again Darkness now but knowing light will come Blue green swirling, washing me away Arising out of the sinking waters Trying to reach the place where the water meets light Chorus Rainbows fall and flow Into the abyss of the ocean As I am immersed and held (In its midst), I am home Reflection of the sky on waters blue Lifts me up with light, I’m rising out Iridescent rising, calming seas I’m part of everything Connecting me now Chorus Rainbows fall and flow Into the abyss of the ocean As I am immersed and held (In its midst), I am home Rainbows fall and flow (I am home) © Catherine Rutten 2022

Flood and Float Words by All Directions Community Choir Composition and arrangement by Cath Rutten Oh flood, oh flood Taking me down, taking me down Drowning, drowning Spiralling down, a flood of emotion is taking me Overcome it’s just too much to hold Cannot find my way, can’t get my head up to the sun Overcome it’s crashing down on me I am falling I am struggling with the weight of me Oh flood, oh flood Taking me down, taking me down Drowning, drowning Spiralling down, a flood of emotion is taking me I am crushed, I am still, I am breath, I am life! I am crushed, I am still, I am breath, I am life! Floating, floating I have ceased to struggle, allowing myself weightlessness Rising, rising Found a way to rest my soul and calm my mind Floating, floating I have ceased to struggle, allowing myself weightlessness Rising, rising Found a way to rest my soul and calm my mind Floating, floating, floating, rising © Catherine Rutten 2022

Jubilation of Need (are you listening?) Words by All Directions Community Choir Composition and arrangement by Cath Rutten We’re so hungry, Hallelujah! we’re so hungry tell me are you listening We’re so hungry, Hallelujah! We’re so thirsty, but we’re gonna keep on shouting We’re so thirsty, Hallelujah! We’re so thirsty, for the waters of love But we won’t drink it from a bottle, comes from you and me oh yeah Because we know that it comes from our community oh yeah Yeah we know that it comes from you and me oh yeah Oh yes we know that it comes from our community oh yeah We’re so hungry, Hallelujah! We’re so hungry, tell me are you listening We’re so thirsty, Hallelujah! Ripples 03:11
Ripples Words by All Directions Community Choir Composition and arrangement by Cath Rutten Ripples on the surface Waves on a lake Ripples are flickering Twinkling of light Ripple of flesh Instinct, dissonance Inside is crippled Or simply is sad Chorus We are connected What we do and say matters Our words land in water Create ripples or waves I once threw a pebble thinking it made no difference But in tiny, small increments Through the vastness of time The pebble made ripples Relentlessly widening Wearing away at the shore of the land Chorus We are connected What we do and say matters Our words land in water Create ripples or waves You once threw a pebble thinking it made no difference But in tiny, small increments Through the vastness of time The pebble made ripples Relentlessly widening Wearing away at my soul and my mind Chorus © Catherine Rutten 2022

Adventure 04:40
Adventure Words by All Directions Community Choir Composition and arrangement by Cath Rutten This my life, my living adventure… © Catherine Rutten 2022 Under the Door Written and spoked by Kath Testro The water seeped slowly under the door And snaked its way across the floor The kids all squealed and shrieked with delight And the dog howled madly as it took flight And I, I just stood there Transfixed by the unchecked flowing water Fraser Island Written by Paul Cruickshank Spoken by David Grumont I’m walking in a river on Fraser Island It’s clear and still So clear in fact that it’s like I’m not in water at all I can see my feet so well Light breaks through the ferns above the river I am seven and I am free and I’m alive My family is with me It’s an adventure Battered and Bruised Written and spoken by Terri Fealy I howled as I was put to bed for a nap My father, brothers and sister had gone out for a walk Leaving me behind because I was just too little They arrived home hours later, battered and bruised Walking along the rocky shore with waves crashing Sending up white crescendos Unknown to them the tide was coming in And the waves got more ferocious Barely noticed, a massive wave came towards them With fear my father raised my sister to his shoulders As they were all smashed against the cliff like rag dolls Somehow, they were not washed away But the ferocity of the wave left it’ mark on their bodies Naively, I was still jealous that I was not with them Tears Ago Written and spoken by Kath Testro Tears ago, my loved one died Tears ago, I cried and cried Tears ago I wept and raged For a life that might have never been For a life that I had loved and seen The Humble Puddle Written by Shirley Wagner Spoken by David Grumont So alone but high in spirit With the wind rippling its edges And the sun dances It awaits the playfulness of a bird bathing and drinking Capturing its reflection as they say hello… The playfulness of boisterous children, the splash as they jump Brings joy, joy, joy The Currawongs Written and spoken by Kath Testro An old lady told me a long time ago The Currawongs come down from the hills A few days before it rains Unafraid Written and spoken by Terri Fealy A toddler sitting on the water’s edge Laughing as the waves crash over her head Unafraid A love of water forever

about

Songs and Stories from the Deep is an original composition project by All Directions Community Choir with director Cath Rutten. With funding from Boroondara City Council through the grants program, and the Rotary Club of Balwyn, writing workshops were held using water as a metaphor for living. They wrote from the heart about their experiences of life, the struggles as well as their sense of joy and adventure.
